ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

   The Department of Hindi was established in 1956 and it offered Hindi as a second language for the Pre University Couses. From 1957 it is offering Hindi for the undergraduate programmes.The Department of Hindi envisions empowering students to become proficient in Hindi, fostering cross-cultural understanding, and contributing to the enrichment of global linguistic and literary diversity. The syllabus was revised and updated in 2007 under the autonomous stream keeping in focus the relevance of the language according to the changing times. Our undergraduate programs include Hindi Papers I and II for all UG streams and Papers III and IV specifically tailored for B.A. and B.Sc. programs. The department also offers a Skill Based Elective course on Conversational Hindi. The Department of Hindi is not just about academics; it believes in holistic development. The Hindi Literary Association, actively organizes a range of events, including interdepartmental patriotic singing competitions, poster competitions, short story contests, essay writing, poetry writing, and literary quiz competitions. Hindi Divas and National Unity Day are celebrated every year. Invited resource talks and seminars are also organized to create a vibrant literary and cultural atmosphere. The department updates the syllabus regularly to incorporate new trends and technologies and equips the students with skills for diverse career paths, including translation, e-content development, and journalism.

FACULTY PROFILE

Dr. Elsamma Cherian currently serves as the Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Hindi, Auxilium College (Autonomous), Vellore. She has 34 years of teaching experience. She completed M.A. in Hindi Language and Literature from St. Thomas College, Pala, Kerala in 1988. She also completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Translation and Office Procedure in 1989. She obtained her Ph.D. from Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala in the year 2001 on the topic ‘Social consciousness in the novels of Bhairav Prasad Gupta’. Her research interest includes Modern Literature, Comparative Literature and Translation. She has presented papers in various National seminars and conferences and published papers in National journals and book chapters.
