ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

    The vision of the PG and Research Department of Chemistry is to inculcate a keen interest in learning Chemistry, acquiring skills in carrying out tasks systematically with perseverance and precision, motivating towards research, inspiring to lead a life with scientific approach and promote the standard of personal and societal living. The Department of Chemistry which had a sterling start in 1957 now offers B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. programmes. The PG programme was started in 2005 and Ph.D. in 2009. M.Phil. Programme was offered from 2008 till 2018.The year 2007 marked the splendour and legend of its Golden Jubilee. The Department holds a remarkable record of achievements and accomplishments amidst challenges, which were transformed successfully into stepping-stones for its progress.

    The Department offers in addition to the core courses, Skill Based Electives (SBE) - Agricultural Chemistry for non-Chemistry I year students of and Non Major Elective (NME)-Food and Nutrition Chemistry for non-Chemistry III year students of Shift I and Non Major Elective (NME)- Cosmetics and Dyes for non-Chemistry III year students of Shift I. SBE- Small Scale Chemistry and SBE-Food Chemistry are offered for B.Sc. Chemistry students in the fifth and sixth semesters respectively. The Department offers Independent Elective Courses such as Dairy Chemistry, Quality Control and Chemical Analysis, Research Methodology, CSIR-NET Preparatory Course in Inorganic Chemistry, Water Chemistry, CSIR-NET Preparatory Course in Organic Chemistry, Forensic Chemistry, CSIR-NET Preparatory Course in Physical Chemistry, Advanced Instrumentation Techniques and Leather Chemistry for PG students. The Postgraduate students carry out summer projects in other universities, industries and colleges.

    The Department is furnished with fully equipped laboratories, spacious store rooms, Book Bank facility, Audio Visual Aids, Research Laboratory and Instrumentation Room along with provisions made for rainwater harvesting.The instrumentation centre is equipped with the latest instruments such as JASCO V 730 UV-Visible Spectrophotometer, FTIR Bruker Spectrometer with ATR, FTIR Schimadzu, UV Schimadzu, Electrochemical work station, Digital Micrometer, Flame Photometer, Vacuum Rotor, Sonicator, Colorimeter, Spectro Fluorimeter, Turbidometer, Muffle Furnace, Cooling Centrifuge, Salinity Meter, Polarimeter, pH meter, Nephlometer, Deionizer, Digital Potentiometers, Digital Conductometers, Digital Micrometer, Computers with Printers, Vacuum Oven and Fume Hoods etc.

    The Department is an active member of RUSAC (Rural Society for the Advancement of Chemistry). The seminars, industrial visits, paper presentation, quiz, debate, career guidance programme and science exhibitions organized through RUSAC help in enhancing the skills of the students. An annual periodical CHRYSL (Chemistry Resonating in Young Students’ Lives) is also released since 2005 which gives expression to the creativity and the aspirations of the young and old Auxilians.

    The past pupils’ association was christened ACAM (Auxilium Chemistry Alumnae Movement) in the year 2005. ACAM is a brainchild of Rev.Sr.Alphonsa Mary, the former Principal of the College. With the financial assistance offered by the past pupils, six scholarships have been instituted.

    Industrial visits are organized every year for the final year UG and PG students to expose the students to the manufacturing processes and spectroscopic techniques. The Madame Marie Curie Endowment Lecture was initiated in 2018-2019 academic year and every year a lecture by an eminent scientist is arranged.

    The innovative initiatives undertaken by the Department are Entrepreneurial Skill Training and Career Guidance Training. Herbo Heal hair oil and Phenyl – Chemaux products are prepared and marketed by the students in the campus. A workshop on career guidance training is offered to the final year students.

    The faculty members of the Department instill a keen interest in research in the young minds and continue to bring out the talents of the students through sports, extra-curricular and co-curricular activities thereby inculcating a sense of responsibility and train students making them good and honest citizens.

FACULTY PROFILE

Dr. S.Jhancy Mary M.Sc., M.Phil., Ph.D. currently serves as an Associate Professor & Head, Department of Chemistry, Auxilium College (Autonomous), Vellore. She has 37 years of teaching experience. She completed her Ph.D in the year 2009 from the University of Madras. The title of her thesis is “Synthesis and Studies on Electroactive Substituted Polyaniline Blends’. Her research interests include Conducting Polymers, Substituted polyanilines, their nano blends and nano composites for applications in Electronics, Lithium ion Batteries and Bio Sensors. Five students have been awarded Ph.D. degrees under her guidance and one student has submitted her thesis. She has published 29 research papers. She has organized 2 International, 6 National conferences in Chemistry and 2 National seminars in Quality Assessment as IQAC Member, One RUSAC intercollegiate programme per academic year and 5 Madame Marie Curie Endowment lectures and many State level Programmes.

 
 
 

Dr. Rosaline Ezhilarasi J. currently serves as Associate Professor at the Post Graduate and Research Department of Chemistry, Auxilium College (Autonomous), Vellore. She has 26 years of teaching experience. She completed her B.Sc. at Holy Cross College (Autonomous), Tiruchirappalli, and acquired M.Sc. and M.Phil. at St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli. She qualified GATE in 1996 and cleared SLET (State Level Eligibility Test) in 1999. She obtained her Ph.D. from Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore. Her research interests include study of metal complexes, development of novel bi and tri metallic nanoparticles/nanocomposites and waste water treatment. She is currently guiding scholars in the areas of bimetallic nanoparticles.

 
 

Dr. Scholastica Mary Vithiya B. currently serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Auxilium College (Autonomous), Vellore. She has 16 years of teaching experience. She qualified her UGC-CSIR NET in June 2000 and had qualified GATE in the years 1998 and 2000 with good percentile scores. She completed her Ph.D in the year 2012 from University of Madras. Her research interests include Screening of Medicinal Plants for Natural Products and Green Synthesis of Nanoparticles. She is currently guiding research scholars in the area of Green Synthesis of Nanoparticles, Ethical Committee Member – IRB, CMC, Vellore and Mentor – DST WOSA Project.

 
 

Dr. V. Sugantha Kumari is an Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry at Auxilium College, Vellore with more than 23 years of academic experience. She pursued her master degree from Muthurangam Government Arts College, Vellore, and she was a rank holder from the University of Madras and she earned her Ph.D from Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore. She has executed as Principal Investigator for Government of India sponsored projects of UGC Minor Research Project and DST-SERB Fast Track scheme for Young Scientist Major Project of sanctioned amount of 25.9 Lakhs.She has published more than 40 research papers in reputed peer reviewed journals with high impact factor including one book and two book chapters. 2 Ph.D. students, received the doctrates under her supervision, 3 Ph.D. students submitted the thesis and currently guiding 2 Ph.D. students. Her primary research interest targeted at ‘biopolymer-nanocomposites’, interdisciplinary approach reflects new approaches to synthesis and processing of materials at structured interfaces, enabling higher functionality structures and scaffold formation for tissue engineering. She is currently positioned as Dean of Research. She has organized FDP, seminars and conferences funded by the UGC and TNSCST.

 
 

Dr. R. Sangeetharani is working as Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Auxilium College (Autonomous), Vellore. She has 6.5 years of teaching experience. She has obtained her Ph.D. in the year 2018 from Anna University, Chennai. She has presented papers in national and international seminar and conferences. She has published papers in various journals and conferences. Her research interests include Luminescent Phosphors and Radiation measurements.

 

Dr. Subashini D, currently serves as Assistant Professor in the department of Chemistry, Auxilium College, Katpadi, Vellore. She has 9 years of teaching experiences. She completed her B.Sc. (Chemistry) at Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed Women’s College, Teynampet, and acquired M.Sc. (Applied Chemistry) from Anna University, Chennai. She obtained her Ph.D in the year 2009 from Anna University, Chennai. Her research interests include Catalysis, Peptide and protein synthesis, carbon nanotubes and nanomaterials. She has published 3 papers in International journals and 1 paper in Indian Journal.

 
 

Dr. R. Lakshmi is working as Assistant Professor is currently working as Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry, Auxilium College, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India. She obtained her M.Sc. degree from Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT, Vellore) in 2009, M. Phil from Loyola College, Chennai in 2010 and Ph.D. degree from the VIT, Vellore in 2016. She has 7 years of teaching experience. Her research interests include Bioceramics, Biopolymers, Composites and Bone Tissue Engineering. She published 7 international papers, 1 national paper, 1 book chapter and filed 1 XRD pattern of Wollastonite in JCPDS

 
 

Dr. E. Radha presently works as Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Auxilium College (Autonomous), Vellore. She has 14 years of teaching experience. She has obtained her Ph.D in the year 2020 from DKM College for Women (Autonomous), Vellore. She has presented papers in national and international seminar and conferences. She has published papers in various journals and conference. Her research interests include Wastewater Treatment using Biodegradable Materials.

 
 

Dr. Rajalakshmi V currently serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Auxilium College (Autonomous), Vellore. She has 3 years of industrial experience and 7 years of teaching experience. She completed her B.Sc. (Chemistry) at Quaid-e-Millath Government College for Women, Chennai, and acquired M.Sc. (General Chemistry) at Presidency College, Chennai. She completed her Ph.D. in the year 2008 from University of Madras. She qualified her SET in 2016. Her research interests include Bioinorganic Chemistry.

 
 

Sr. D.Switha M.Sc., B.Ed., M.Phil., Ph.D. currently serves as an Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, Auxilium College (Autonomous), Vellore. She submitted her Thesis on July 2023 to Thiruvalluvar University, Serkkadu, Vellore 15. The title of her thesis is “Fabrication, Physicochemical and Biological Investigation of Nanopolysaccharides Reinforced Polyaniline-Polyvinyl alcohol Bionanocomposites for Tissue Engineering Application.

 
 

Dr. Mubashirunnisa A. currently serves as Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemistry at Auxilium College (Autonomous), Vellore. She has 8 years of teaching experience. She completed her B.Sc. at Auxilium College, and acquired M.Sc. and M.Phil. in Chemistry from Muthurangam Government Arts & Science College, Vellore . She obtained her Ph.D. in the year 2014 from Manonmaniyam Sundharanar University, Tirunelveli. Her research interests include Biopolymers, Removal of heavy metals and water treatment. She published papers in international journals and conferences.

 

Dr. Badma Priya D. presently working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Auxilium College (Autonomous), Vellore. She has 5 years of teaching and research experience. She completed her B.Sc., at Arcot Sri Mahalakshmi Women’s college, M.Sc., at Sacred heart College, Thirupattur, M.Tech.,(Nanotechnology) at Karunya University, Coimbatore, and M.Phil., at D.K.M. Women’s College, Vellore. She obtained her Ph.D. degree from Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Vellore in 2018. She has published more than 12 research articles in National/International journals and also published one Indian patent. Her research interests include Nanomaterials, Catalysis, Photocatalysis, Kinetics, Nano Metal and Metal Oxides.

PROJECT

DST Sponsored Women Scientist A Project titled “In silicodissection of tRNA modifying enzymes in eukaryotic pathogens-expediting the discovery of novel therapeutic targets”.

Dr. V S Gowri is the principal investigator of the above-mentioned project. She is currently a Project Scientist-I at the Department ofChemistry working on the broad area of Computer-aided drug designing.She graduated M.Sc. Chemistry from Bharathidasan University in 2001, earned her PhD from Molecular Biophysics Unit, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 2008. She has a broad postdoctoral experience at various research institutes as a visiting fellow at NCBS (A TIFR unit of Biological Sciences), Bangalore to a UGC- Kothari fellow at Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi. She has 5 Years of teaching experience. She is a recipient of “Young Women Scientist” Award in the year 2022 from the Nature Science Foundation, Coimbatore.
