DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The PG and Research Department of Chemistry envisions fostering a deep and enduring passion for learning Chemistry, cultivating precision, perseverance, and systematic work ethics among students. The Department strives to motivate budding chemists towards research, nurture scientific thinking as a way of life, and inspire individuals to lead a life enriched by curiosity, innovation, and societal contribution.

Established in 1957, the Department of Chemistry has grown from strength to strength and now proudly offers B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. programmes. The Postgraduate programme commenced in 2005, followed by the Ph.D. programme in 2009, while the M.Phil. programme was offered from 2008 to 2018. The Golden Jubilee in 2007 marked a milestone of excellence, celebrating a legacy of academic brilliance and innovation. Over the years, the Department has built a commendable record of achievements, successfully turning challenges into stepping stones for progress.

In addition to core courses, the Department offers Non-Major Electives (NME) such as Food and Nutrition Chemistry and Cosmetics and Dyes for non-Chemistry III-year students of Shift I. For B.Sc. Chemistry students, Skill-Based Electives like Small Scale Chemistry and Food Chemistry are offered during the fifth and sixth semesters respectively. Postgraduate students gain valuable exposure by undertaking summer projects in reputed universities, industries, and research institutions.

The Department also offers a 30-hour Value Added Course titled “Cottage Industries” that blends creativity with entrepreneurship. The course introduces students to needlework, hand embroidery, paper craft, and baking, while imparting hands-on skills to create small-scale household products. It aims to inspire innovation and empower students to launch their own start-ups for self-employment.

The Department is well-equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories, spacious store rooms, a Book Bank, Audio-Visual Aids, a Research Laboratory, and a dedicated Instrumentation Room with provisions for rainwater harvesting.

The Instrumentation Centre houses advanced equipment including:

  • JASCO V-730 UV-Visible Spectrophotometer
  • FTIR Bruker Spectrometer with ATR
  • FTIR Shimadzu and UV Shimadzu spectrometers
  • Electrochemical Work Station, Digital Micrometer, Flame Photometer, Vacuum Rotor, Sonicator, Colorimeter, Spectrofluorimeter, Turbidometer, Muffle Furnace, Cooling Centrifuge, Salinity Meter, Polarimeter, pH Meter, Nephelometer, Deionizer, Digital Potentiometers, Digital Conductometers, Computers with Printers, Vacuum Oven, and Fume Hoods, among others.

The Department actively participates in RUSAC (Rural Society for the Advancement of Chemistry). Through RUSAC, students engage in seminars, industrial visits, paper presentations, quizzes, debates, career guidance programmes, and science exhibitions, all of which help enhance their knowledge and professional skills. Since 2005, the Department has been publishing CHRYSL (Chemistry Resonating in Young Students’ Lives) — an annual magazine that serves as a creative platform reflecting the aspirations and innovations of both students and faculty.

The Auxilium Chemistry Alumnae Movement (ACAM), founded in 2005 under the guidance of Rev. Sr. Alphonsa Mary, the former Principal, stands as a testament to the enduring bond between the Department and its alumnae. With the generous contributions of past pupils, six scholarships have been instituted to support deserving students.

Every year, industrial visits are organized for final-year UG and PG students, offering firsthand exposure to manufacturing processes and spectroscopic techniques. In the 2018–2019 academic year, the Madame Marie Curie Endowment Lecture was inaugurated, and since then, distinguished scientists have been invited annually to deliver inspiring lectures.

The Department continually introduces innovative initiatives, such as Entrepreneurial Skill Training and Career Guidance Workshops. Students actively participate in the preparation and marketing of campus-based Chemaux products like Herbo Heal hair oil and Phenyl, reflecting the Department’s focus on hands-on learning and entrepreneurship.

The dedicated faculty members play a vital role in igniting a passion for research, encouraging holistic development through sports, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities, and nurturing values of responsibility, integrity, and citizenship. The Department takes pride in shaping students into not only competent chemists but also conscientious individuals who contribute meaningfully to society.
