Call to End Modern Slavery
“End the modern slavery of human trafficking” says Pope Francis. Adhering to the voice of Holy Father and in an effort to conscientize the young people regarding this modern evil, ‘Kanali’ the Women’s Cell of Auxilium College, Vellore, National Development Forum (NDF) of Salesian Sisters, India and the International Justice Mission (IJM), jointly conducted a three day training cum workshop at the intercollegiate level on ‘The Protection of Children: Anti Human Trafficking Initiative” from July 1 to 3, 2016.
Forty three students from various colleges participated in the event. In the inaugural address, the chief guest Ms. Udhaya Kumari, Sub Inspector of Katpadi Police, made clear the need of this kind of work shop for the college students. Sr. Amala Samala, the Secretary of the College, felicitated the facilitators of the workshop and invited the young people to become agents of social change and fight against this contemporary evil. Sr. Isabella Alphonse, the Director of National Development Forum gave in detail the purpose of the workshop highlighting its various aspects.
The workshop was facilitated by the member advocates of International Justice Mission (IJM): Mr. Mervyn D’ Mello from Mumbai, Mr. Paul Anbarasu, Mr. Clement David, Mr. Sam Jebadurai, Ms. Ananda Rani, Mr. Raj Kumar and Ms. Rosy from Chennai. IJM is one of the world’s largest antislavery organizations that work to abolish all kinds of slavery and promote justice all levels.
All the sessions were interesting and informative, involving and stimulating the young people to wards purposeful thinking and appropriate action.
Group games, quiz, documentary films, data presentation and other such strategies and methodologies helped the students to grasp all the nuances of this big iniquity and kindled in them the urge to break the shackles of human slavery.
The final session was an evaluation on the goals and objectives of the workshop and the distribution of certificates. ‘Kanali’ the Women’s Cell of Auxilium College was happy to have entered into this joint venture with NDF – India and IJM in promoting justice, integrity and human dignity.
