About the Department
Botany department was started in 1964 as an allied subject. It was offered to II B.Sc Zoology(Allied) and to B.Sc Chemistry(Optional). This department has improved with papers for other departments too. Our department aims at producing young girls who are interested in plants and its application in daily life. They also improve knowledge of ethno botany (medicinal plants) and conservation of environment. Our subject knowledge helps them in research persual. Students who have thirst in this knowledge will excel. So far we have produced successful results and are striving for more.

The Department of Biochemistry & Microbiology organized a one day National Seminar, “The Frontiers of Life Science’- Biomic’17” on 13th September 2017. The programme started with the inaugural function. The chief guest of the inaugural function, Dr. G.Venkateswaran in his inaugural address highlighted the importance of Life Science and its interdisciplinary approach. The seminar had five scientific sessions by eminent speakers from various organizations/ academic institutions/ industries. The first resource session was by Dr.G.Venkateswaran, Chief Scientist & Head, Department of Food Microbiology & Fermentation Technology, CFTRI, Mysore on the topic “Food Enzymes and their Industrial Importance”. The second resource speaker, Dr.Joy Sarojini Michael, Professor, Department of Microbiology, Christian Medical College, Vellore highlighted on “Clinicoepidemiological aspects of Mycobacterial Disease”. The third session on “Antimicrobial activity of peptides isolated from selected Indian Ascidians” was by Dr. R.Saravanan, Assistant Professor in Marine Pharmacology, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Chettinad Academy of Research & Education, Kelambakkam, Kanchipuram. Dr. Vijayashankar Asokan, Postdoctoral Researcher, Center of Electron Microscopy, Zhejiang University, China, in his session- the Fourth session outlined on “Characterization of Biomaterial using electron Microscopy”. The final fifth session on “Viral Hepatitis in India” was by Dr.C.E Eapen, Medical Superintendent, Christian Medical College, Vellore. The valedictory function was presided over by Dr.C.E Eapen and distributed certificates to all the participants. Around 102 participants from various Colleges and University actively participated in the seminar.
Enviro Club (Shift II) & Department of Biochemistry - National Workshop:
A two days national Workshop was organized in collaboration with National Biodiversity Authority, Chennai on “Biological Diversity Act” on 18th -19th Jan. The main objective of the workshop is to provide orientation for College/School teachers on the provisions of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002. Many academic researchers, college and school teachers of Life Science departments and members of NGO are participated in this workshop. On the first day of the workshop, our college secretary, principal and chief guest Dr. B. Meenakumari inaugurated the National workshop by lighting the kuthuvilakku. The inauguaral address was given by Dr. B. Meenakumari, Chair person, National Biodiversity Authority, Chennai. Dr Bhavani Shankar, Senior Principle, OMEGA International, Chennai, delivered his first resource talk on “Practical experiences of preparing PBRs”. Dr. C. Thomson Jacob, Consultant, Centre for Biodiversity policy and Law, focused on “Biological Diversity action plan” It was followed by the talk on “Intellectual Property Right” by Dr. Narendran, Technical Officer, IPR, National Biodiversity Authority. After the lunch break, Dr. Ishwar Poojar, UNEP-GEF ABS Project shared his views on the importance of documenting traditional knowledge on ABS. The last session was on “International Environmental Laws” by Ms. P. Kanthi Meenakshi, Legal Wing, National Biodiversity Authority. On the second day of workshop, the field visit was arranged to Kupam BMC, Andhra Pradesh. Dr. V. Srinivasa Rao, State Project Coordinator UNEP-GEF-MoEF & CC- ABS Project, Andhra Pradesh expressed his experiences on Constitution of BMCs and Preparation of PBRs. The valedictory function and distribution of certificates was presided over by Dr. (Sr) Regina Mary. R, Principal, Auxilium College, Vellore.
Association activities (Regular association activities, Field visits)
The inauguration of the Biochemistry association was held on 29th July 2015. Mr. H.S Muthu Mohammed, Head & Associate Professor, Department of Biotechnology, Islamiah College, Vaniyambadi presided over the function. The chief guest gave a lecture on “Career Opportunities in Biochemistry & Biotechnology”. The students of Biochemistry department presented posters related to the “Recent trends in Biochemistry” and the best posters were selected by the chief guest.
A model making competition was conducted on 14th September 2015. The models were judged by Ms. Jayanthi M, Head & Associate Professor, Department of Biochemistry, Adhiparasakthi College of Arts and Science, Kalavai. The chief guest animated the students on the topic “Molecular Signalling”.
On 27th January 2016, the department of Biochemistry organized an awareness camp on the “Role of Thyroid Hormone in Women Health” and a ‘Blood Test Camp’ in collaboration with Abbott India Ltd, Mumbai & Sapthagiri Diagnostic Centre, Vellore, at Auxilium College campus. 150 students and 40 staff were the beneficiaries. Blood samples were collected from them for the diagnosis of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) and Haemoglobin (Hb).
On 3rd February 2016, the department of Biochemistry organized a “Career guidance Programme” for the final year students in collaboration with Indian Health Care, BPO, Vellore. Mr.Gokul, HR consultant, Indian Health care, BPO animated the Biochemistry final year students on the topic “Scope of Medical Coding”. A Screening test was conducted to examine the communication skill and subject knowledge of the students. Out of forty one students two students were selected on spot for job.
A “Vegetable Carving” competition was conducted on 24th February 2016. Ms. B.V.Gowri, Head and Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, Auxilium College, Vellore judged the competition and the prize winners were announced.
The inauguration of Biochemistry association was held on 26th July 2016. Mr. P.Arulkumaran, Head and Associate Professor, Department of Biochemistry, Aadhiparasakthi agricultural College, Kalavi presided over the function and gave a lecture on “Career opportunities in Biochemistry”. Also posters on Recent trends in Biochemistry were displayed by the students.
Dr. R. Sudhakaran, Assistant Professor (Senior), Aquaculture Biotechnology Laboratory, School of Biosciences and Technology, VIT, Vellore animated on the topic “Polymerase Chain Reaction” on 20th September 2016 and judged the models displayed by the students.
Dr. Gayathri Gopinath, Assistant Professor (Senior), Department of Biotechnology, SBST, VIT university, Vellore gave a lecture on the topic “What Next After Biochemistry” on 14th October 2016. “Vegetable carving” competition was also conducted as a part of the association activity.
Dr. V.Prabha, Head and Assistant Professor, Department of Biochemistry, D.K.M College, Vellore delivered a lecture on ‘Marine algae: The ocean Treasure’ on 19th December 2016. “Just A Minute” competition was also conducted as association activity.
Dr. Anjana Joel, Assistant Professor, Department of Medical Oncology, CMC, Vellore, delivered a lecture on “Risk factors of Cancer & Prevention” for the students on 23rd February 2017. A skit was also performed to create awareness on ‘Cancer & Symptoms”.
Quiz competition on ‘General Biochemistry” was conducted on 27th February 2017, as a part of association activity for the students.
The inauguration of Biochemistry Association was held on 27th July 2017. Dr. Victoria Job, (Rtd), Head department of Biochemistry, CMC, Vellore presided over the function and gave a lecture on “Recent trends in Clinical Biochemistry”. Also posters on “Recent trends in Biochemistry” were displaced by the students.
Dr.Senthil kumar Krishnamoorthi, Senior Research Assistant, School of Chinese Medicine, Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong gave a lecture on “ Role of Siddha and Ayurveda Medicine in treating Bone fracture” on 11th October 2017.
Dr.S.R Suseem, Assistant Professor (Senior), Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, School of Advanced Science, VIT University, Vellore delivered a lecture on “Ecological importance of Mushrooms and its impact on human life” for the students on 6th December. Model making competition was also conduced as a part of association activity.
Dr. Hepsibha Elsie, Assistant Professor Department of Biochemistry, DKM College, Vellore gave a talk on “Scope of Biochemistry” on 20th February 2018. Just A Minute (JAM) competition was also conducted as a part of association activity.
The inauguration of Biochemistry Association was organized on 23rd July 2018. Dr. R. Maheswari, Head, PG & Research Department of Biochemistry, K.M.G College of Arts & Science, Gudiyattam was the chief guest .The chief guest gave an inaugural talk and motivated the students to develop their practical skills. “The scope of Biochemistry” in various fields was also highlighted to the students. Following the programme, a poster presentation competition was conducted. The students of Biochemistry department actively participated and exhibited their talents. The chief guest judged the posters and announced the prize winners.
On 3rd September 2018 a guest lecture was organized as a part association activity. Dr. Subhashree.V, Associate Professor, Department of Integrative Biology, SBST, VIT, Vellore was the chief guest. The chief guest delivered a lecture on “Impact of Cholesterol on Cardiovascular diseases”. Model making competition was also conducted. The students actively participated in model making competition and exhibited their talents. The chief guest judged the models and announced the prize winners.
A guest lecture was organized on 5th October 2018. Dr. Vijayalakshmi S, Assistant Professor, Carbondioxide Research and Green Technologies Centre, VIT University, Vellore was the chief guest. The chief guest delivered a lecture on “Novel Technique for the isolation and Structural elucidation of heterocarbon derivative from fungi”.
“Article Writing” competition was organized on 24th October 2018. Ms. Gowri B V, Head department of Microbiology, Auxilium College,Vellore judged the articles and announced the prize winners.
Vegetable carving competition was conducted on 29th January 2019. Dr. Auxilia Antony S, Head & Assistant Professor, Department of Commerce, Auxilium College, Vellore, judged the competition and announced the prize winners. Students of Biochemistry department actively participated in this activity and exhibited their talents.
Facilities for Research in the department.
As a part of extension activity the department of Biochemistry organized an awareness on “Cleanliness and Healthy Food” at Sarvajana Middle Aided School, Thottapalayam, Vellore. Around 21 students and 2 staff members participated in this activity. Nearly 100 school students were benefited.2017-2018
On 10th October 2017, “Dengue Awareness Program” was organized at Pachayat Union School, Katpadi. Students from III B.Sc Biochemistry performed a skit animating the causes, symptoms, diagnosis and preventive measures for dengue. Nearly 85 students were benefited by this programme.
On 16th February 2018, “Cleanliness Awareness Programme” was organized by ten students from III B.Sc Biochemistry and one staff at Panchayat Union Primary School, Dharapadavedu, Katpadi. Nearly 50 students were benefited.2018-2019
On 26 thJuly 2018, as a part of extension activity the Department of Biochemistry organized an awareness programme on “Health and Hygiene” at Sri Sarada Vidyalaya Nursery and Primary School, Gandhi Nagar, Vellore-6. Thirteen students from III B.Sc Biochemistry along with two staff members participated in this activity. Students A skit was performed by third year students animating the importance of health and hygiene. Nearly 73 students were benefited through this programme.
Nearly 7 students from III-B.Sc Biochemistry along with one staff participated in “Cleanliness Awareness Programme” at Thulir Nursery and Primary School, Gandhi Nagar, Vellore, on 17th October 2018 . Skit were performed by the third year students indicating the importance of cleanliness and health. Nearly 50 school students were benefited through this.
